Why is Apple tracking you?

News surfaced yesterday that Apple has been secretly keeping tabs on everywhere you've ever been.

And by tabs I mean, tiny bits of data stored on your i Device and also stored on whichever computer you sync your device to.

Anyone who has used the camera on the phone will realize that "places" in the photo app will show you where you've been. Which to me is pretty cool.

However, after viewing places, is it that much of a stretch to think that the phone isn't tracking you completely?

The questions which remain are:

  • Why are they tracking you?
  • Is this a bug?
  • Are they collecting/mining this data?

With the scrutiny that Facebook receives over privacy issues, I doubt Apple would be stupid enough to actually be collecting the data. But the data is being stored for some reason. Congress is ready to inquire as to why.

Senator Paul Simon of Minnesota has issued an open letter to Apple regarding this.

Apple, as of yet, has not made any public statements.
